At Futurebytes, we are dedicated to shaping the innovators of tomorrow. With a mission to make learning accessible and engaging, we’re excited to inspire young minds this summer and beyond. See you this summer at Futurebytes—where curiosity meets creativity!
Children can explore AI concepts through sorting, acting, and discussion, with a screen used only when it adds something specific. An unplugged activity will not reproduce a full machine learning system, but it can make ideas such as examples, labels, and testing easier to talk about.
Act out learning from examples
Prepare cards showing fictional creatures with different ears, tails, and colors. Label a few as forest creatures and others as mountain creatures. Ask a group to infer a rule from those examples, then classify new cards.
Reveal a card that challenges the rule. Discuss whether the original examples represented enough variety. Explain that a trained model also depends on its examples, although its learning process differs from people discussing cards. AI4K12 organizes introductory learning around core AI ideas, including how systems learn and their effects on society. [1]
Make testing a separate step
Keep some cards hidden until after the group decides on its rule. These represent test examples: cases that were not used to establish the rule. Ask whether success on familiar cards means the rule will work on unfamiliar ones.
Change one feature in a new card and compare decisions. This creates a reason to discuss uncertainty and fairness. If every training example of a forest creature is green, the group may confuse color with habitat. Children can see why the choice of examples matters.
Give the screen a clear purpose
If you add a supervised demonstration, decide in advance what the child will observe. A simple classifier might show how its prediction changes for a new object. Use non-personal materials, check the tool's current age and privacy requirements, and return to an offline discussion afterward.
Ask your child to draw the relationship between examples and predictions. CS Unplugged offers a broader model for teaching computing through physical activities. [2] Bay Area parents seeking hands-on AI learning can ask how a lesson divides time among making, discussing, and using a device. The important measure is whether each part contributes to the learning goal.
