Choose a STEM program by matching what your child enjoys with the kind of challenge they are ready to attempt. Begin with a specific learning goal, such as following a program, testing a physical design, or explaining how data affects a prediction. A broad promise to teach future skills is harder to evaluate.

‍

Use interests to identify a starting subject

‍

A child who likes constructing models may enjoy robotics or engineering. A storyteller might connect with animation and coding. A child who asks how a machine recognizes objects may be interested in an introductory AI activity. These are possible entry points, not fixed categories of children.

Describe the first project together. Would your child rather make a robot move through a course or create an interactive story? A concrete choice often tells you more than asking whether they like technology.

‍

Check what the course assumes

‍

Ask about reading, typing, building experience, and the number of instructions students must follow independently. The program's age range is a starting guide, but the task may still need adjustment for an individual learner.

Developmentally appropriate practice considers age-related development, individual characteristics, and context. [1] Ask how a class applies that principle when a child needs more demonstration or finishes quickly. An advanced tool is useful only if the learner has enough support to make meaningful decisions with it.

‍

Evaluate the trial with a clear question

‍

Before a trial, decide what you want to learn: Can my child begin the task? Do they understand one new idea? Do they feel comfortable asking for help? Observe the lesson and ask the child afterward what they would like to try next.

Futurebytes' published pathways distinguish LEGO robotics, VEX robotics, and coding and AI options. [2] Families choosing a Bay Area STEM program can compare these subjects while checking the current entry level and format. Select a manageable commitment first. Continue when the child is engaged and gaining useful independence, and change the starting point when the evidence suggests a different fit.
