West Texas Students Explore Energy and Environmental Engineering at a STEM Camp

Hands-on learning | Energy and environmental science

Nearly 30 West Texas high-school students spent a day at Texas Tech University exploring science and engineering used in the energy industry. The July STEM camp included reservoir models, carbon-capture and storage activities, and laboratory work measuring carbon dioxide.

The camp connected a classroom idea with a physical system. Instead of only reading about how underground formations affect fluid movement, students built models and examined what happened when conditions changed. The model was not a complete version of a reservoir, but it gave students something to observe, measure, and discuss.

Carbon capture introduced another kind of challenge. Students encountered a technical problem that crosses chemistry, materials, energy, and environmental science. A useful discussion does not need to turn the activity into a debate. Students can focus on what a process is designed to do, what measurements would show whether it works, and what limits engineers would need to consider.

The camp also introduced students to university life. Working alongside Texas Tech students gave participants a chance to ask what engineering study looks like after high school and how classroom preparation connects to laboratory work. That exposure can be valuable for students who have not previously pictured themselves in a college STEM setting.

The event demonstrates why short programs can be effective when they make students do more than listen. A model, a measurement, and a conversation with someone already studying the field can turn an abstract career description into an experience students can evaluate for themselves.
